conclusion

the resubmission is much more in depth and thought at then the previous submission. unlike the first one i am very happy with the outcome and enjoyed it much more. the website is much more developed, providing a deeper look at biospark and a providing a good framework for the ideas i am exploring through the work. the site is structurally well presented with the only things i am unhappy with being the problem of trying to get rid of the reply box underneath each post and also some issues i had with page layout, but as this is a blogging site it works very well considering. i am presenting only two illustrations on the site, they are much more developed and look great, they also give the feel that intended and work well in the work, the first image shows the tower, a gleaming, crystaline , soaring structure embodying mans dreams and representing the crowning achievement of technological advancement, this is my aspect of the evolution of electricity, the second shows the subsequent conflict stemming from the technology used, specifically in the a.i, this is relating to frankensteins monster and i think the analogy works well in the modern context. i also think that the concept of fire ties in very well through the mythology and ideas behind prometheus, which also ties into mary shelleys novel, i think it is also represented in the darker side of the situation through conflict and the eventual destruction of the tower. the way i have told the story through 'news articles' works well i think as an outside view of the conflict, however im not sure it works as well as it should being on the biospark website. overall i think the work extends my ideas very well and is a much better presentation.
tweaks

the website is a good frame work for the ideas i am trying to present but it needs more depth into the why, more meaning needs to be explored in the conflict between the extremists and biospark.
i also need to frame the story in a way that puts forward the question as to whether or not the a.i was the one who destroyed the city in a way to fight back.

- i have added more context in the conflict and also related it to ideas from dr frankenstein, by portraying the extremist groups as religious it references themes of creation, power and man and god used in the novel.

- i have added in a report that the explosion seemed to start from the top of the tower and not the bottom where the attack was, i have also added a statement from biospark placing the blame firmly on the extremists.

also i have referenced the film in one of my illustrations.

there is a bit more context to the conflict now and further ties the situation in with ideas from dr frankenstein, also more references to the relationship of fire and electricity.

i am also reconfiguring the pages structure as well as i noticed that when the site got navigated a couple of pages were missed.

BioSpark Industries webpage

http://biospark.wordpress.com/

this is the page i have created to present biospark industries. i have developed the story behind the company through company information and "news headlines" that i have created to tell the story of the construction of the tower for project prometheus.

technical aspects of project prometheus and the tower

fusion energy -

http://fusedweb.llnl.gov/

The Sun Runs on Fusion Energy

Like all stars, the sun is a huge fusion reactor, pumping out 100 million times as much energy in a single second as the entire population of Earth uses in a year!

the sun is a huge source of power sending out enormous amounts of energy in the form of radiation, this radiation collides with earths atmosphere.

Prometheus Theory -

with the collision of the suns radiation into the earths atmosphere there is an explosive reaction between the particles, project prometheus is researching and developing a reactor that can harness the energy of these particle collisions.

the tower

the tower is the outcome of the prometheus project, it is basically a huge conduit for energy to be collected from the atmospheric collisions and transferred into usable power. the calculations necessary to predict and control the particle collisions are staggeringly complex and require lightning fast processing, this is why biospark have created the worlds first a.i to run the tower. this massively powerful intelligence is able to run all the processes required to harness the collision energy.

webpage

http://www.energy-industries.com/

this is the website of a company looking at efficient and renewable energy. its corporate structure, language and the feel of the website look to be good models to resource for biospark industries page.

components

home page - welcome message and key features, latest and top news articles

company - about us, short summary of what it is they do, company line, company goals
- history and founding of company
- awards, community

services - services provided, different outlooks of company

news - news related to the company

careers - advertising and job opportunities

contact us - contact details

these seem to be good basic features but the website doesnt go into them in any depth, using structure like this as a base for biospark is a good starting point for realistic components but there is opportunity to provide a lot of depth into the story of biospark through these pages.
resources

- origin: spirits of the past

when the experimental research into adapting and mutating plantlife for growth on the moon gets out of control due to unforseen evoultion of the subjects the earth is ravaged by nature, civilisation pushed back into lesser technology and thrust into a constant struggle with the environment.
this anime touches on themes such as destruction through mankinds lack of control over the technology that they create, it explores the relationship between mankind and the environment and it develops the story on the personal levels of the characters.

- tezuka osamu's metropolis

this is a story about the conflict between humans and they robots they have created as a lesser servant race. it focuses on the journey of a young boy who meets tima, a robot that has been developed to be as near human as possible, she appears to be human on every level and believes herself to be human. when she finds out she isnt and that she has been built to be used as a tool of control she rejects all humanity including her own and lashes back at her creators with the destruction of the city. this anime looks very deeply at the relationship between humans and artifically created robots on individual and social levels, it deals with fear and prejudice between races and also on class systems. the consequences of humanities treatment of tima is similar to themes from frankenstein and violence and hate are strong themes throughout.
concept drawings

concept

- for my resubmitted project i am exploring the company biospark industries further, i am developing it through a webpage and telling the story of the company through news headlines. this way i can create a deeper exploration of biospark and the ideas behind them, im also intending to include key illustrations on the site. i am developing biospark as a reference to themes from frankenstein in the character Dr Frankenstein, the search for power and the development of new technology, control and fear.

biospark

- the story behind biospark is that because of the ever worsening energy and ecological crisis they have developed new technology that can harness energy from the collision of the suns radiation on the earths atmosphere, this is refering to prometheus and stealing fire from the gods. to harness this power they are constructing a tower that reaches the atmosphere, the calculations needed to sustain and contain the influx of energy are so great that biospark needed to develop the worlds first a.i to operate the tower.
the created monster

the story of the created monster has developed from frankensteins pilfering of human remains to create his man into the creation of the representation of man in the form of robots. in E T A Hoffmans story Der Sandman an automaton becomes the focus of love and affection for Nathaniel who believes her to be human, the discovery of her artificiality drives him to his eventual death. In this story the automaton is intertwined with fear of the Sandman, a dark nightmare figure who takes childrens eyes in the night.
this fear is explored further in films such as Blade Runner, Natural City and Tezuka Osamu's Metropolis.

PROMETHEUS

in greek mythology prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to man
, with the use of fire man was able to create tools and begin the developing and advancement of technology, this also led to the creation of weapons and the destructive nature of man to be given new power. prometheus gave mankind power to create and express their nature through technology.

fire gives light and warmth but its nature is elemental and powerful, causing destruction and devestation.
just because we can use fire it doesnt mean we fully understand or control it. i thin that fire is an interesting analogy for aspects of mans nature, we have power at our disposal and we can often use that power in a destructive way, anger and violence relate to this.
FRANKENSTEIN: THE MODERN DAY PROMETHEUS

The modern masters promise very little. . . . but these philosophers. . . have indeed performed miracles. . . . They have discovered how the blood circulates, and the nature of the air we breathe. They have acquired new and almost unlimited powers; they can command the thunders of heaven, mimic the earthquake, and even mock the invisible world with its own shadows.

Professor Waldman to his class at the University of Ingolstadt
Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, 1818

The novel by Mary Shelley deals with the dawning of a new age of knowledge, mastery of new power over the body through medical science and the gateway to power over the world. Dr Frankenstein's quest for mastery over life and creation through this new found power leads to the creation of the "monster". Abandoned by his creator and met with fear and violence when he encounters people the "monster" seeks acceptance among the world, when that fails he seeks revenge.

i think that this fear of the "monster", or the different is as apt in today's world as it was in Mary Shelley's, distrust and intolerance seems to be the norm for todays society even towards each other. the warnings of the thirst for power is also relevant with the advancement of technology in the world reaching science fiction levels. this book deals with many issues that are relevant and important in the world today.

i also think that the ideas in this story are relevant to my project in similar ways, the component of electricity is a main part of the story being a symbol for scientific knowledge and creation. electricity is the spark that brings the "monster" to life. the darker emotions and violence portrayed in the story also relates to themes i want to explore in my work.
PIXEL 2

with the opportunity to resubmit the spark to the pixel project i will be able to create a work that i am happy with, the previous submission was lacking in depth and was presented poorly, i was very unhappy with the outcome. now i can develop my ideas from the first work into something meaningful and that i am happy with.

i have decided to continue with ideas based on frankenstein's monster and biospark industries, however i need to expand and develop the concepts from this base.

so for pixel 2 i am starting with the components of electricity and fire and looking at them in relation to man. to be specific i am looking at electricity as presenting itself through technological advancement and creation and fire as represented both as a provider of life and technology and through the darker side of man, the destructive nature of mankind.

i intend to develop more depth in biospark industries as the foundation for the story, i am looking at them playing the role of Dr Frankenstein in their creation of new technology.
